Foolish Dance Scene with or without Prizes, 1962 Ink on paper 19 ¾ x 26 5/8 inches Collection of the Art Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi 2014.16.9
Hood continued to work in a Surrealist style in her drawings long after she abandoned it in her paintings as in Foolish Dance Scene with or without Prizes from 1962. Here sharply rendered ghoulish figures appear to hover above or ride atop a mechanized arachnid. Freeing her unconscious mind, Hood unleashed a fantastical scene wherein anxiety and terror frolic and abound. Known as a strong and independent woman, Hood utilized her art to identify and release her fears and anxieties.
