Untitled, 1950s Oil and sand on canvas 44 7/8 x 39 7/8 inches Collection of the Art Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi 2014.16.28
This painting exemplifies Hood’s exploration of various techniques and processes. Although she never spoke in any detail about the construction of her works, she utilized different materials, such as the sand in this painting, to play with and add texture. By employing an earthen material, she connects this natural material while metaphorically suggesting the landscape through her imagery of the sky peeking through grand lithified sand formations that form a creviced natural bridge across the canvas.
