Painted at the height of her career, this Untitled work exemplifies Hood’s mastery.  In this large-scale painting, she combined various techniques including decalcomania and mixing chemicals into her oils to create washes and blooms of almost transparent colors that explode across hard-edged rectangles of color that bisect the canvas. The radiant yellow of the left side and the deep black of the right side mark a shift, perhaps from day to night or potentially the trajectory of a blasting rocket from the earth into deep space. Although ambiguous in meaning, through her bold and expressive handling of paint, Hood refers to the passage of conflicting chaotic and calm emotions experienced during emotional or spiritual transitions.
